ailurophile6: (earth)

I don't really celebrate Easter. Today, I get to visit my sister in the hospital and then my parents and I are going to dinner.

My sister recently moved to a new group home, and started 'acting up' so now she's in the pysch unit and frankly, not doing well. Her brain has been destroyed by 25 years of medication (for schizophrenia) and she isn't recognizable as my sister anymore. They'll adjust her meds and the downhill cycle will continue :(

In addition, a couple weeks ago, when I was with her, my mom had a TIA. Scared the hell out of me. She's been fine since, and all her tests are coming back ok, but listening to someone spout gibberish as they think they are making perfect sense is creepy. She turns 80 tomorrow.

We're in the middle of planning an 80th birthday party for her and my dad, to be held next month. I hope they're both up to it!

We went to see Barry Manilow last week. As awesome as ever!

Next weekend I'm meeting Noah Wyle! I'll post my pics :) Really glad The Librarians got a second season, as I loved the first one. And of course, he's in Falling Skies!!

Less than 3 weeks until the Sherlock Con. In addition to autographs and photo ops with SIXTEEN guests!!!! I have a GROUP PHOTO with the main attending cast on the 221B set! I might just keel over after that one, lol. I can't wait to meet them all, especially BENEDICT OMG.

And one of my 13 year old cats went missing for a day and a half. Turns out he snuck into the garage and then hid from me. He finally decided he'd had enough and asked to be let back into the house, lol. But I was relieved to find him, I'd looked everywhere.

The Pens are playing so badly they might not even make the playoffs. Unbelievable! We have the 2 best players in the world. The new coach is a huge disappointment.

So that's what's been going on with me recently. What are you all up to? No one seems to be on lj anymore :(
ailurophile6: (live long and prosper)
I join the geek world to mourn the passing of Leonard Nimoy :( Star Trek TOS was my first sci fi love, and even tho I knew it was coming, this makes me very sad. He lived long and prospered!

With their usual tact and competency, Creation sent out an email today announcing that all of the Chicago Star Trek Con ticket options are now on sale. Nice timing (not)

So I go to look and they have KARL URBAN and COLM MEANEY. OMG I have wanted to meet Colm forever (Hell on Wheels!!). They also have Linda Park and John Billingsley. And Tim Russ and his band are doing a concert.

I want to go! I can fly in Saturday morning and fly home Sunday evening and it's very affordable, even getting the Silver ticket, which includes Colm's autograph.

ETA: Got my silver ticket in the first row so I can get my autographs as quickly as possible!!
ailurophile6: (boldly going nowhere)
So we are not going to Cleveland today. It's snowing like crazy (we're supposed to get 8 inches) and the turnpike is closed due to an accident.

I emailed Wizard World to see if I can exchange my ticket for Pittsburgh in September. I'll probably lose my money on the Karen Gillan autograph though :(

I'd much rather be home safe and warm anyway.

Whose bright idea was it to have a con in Cleveland in February? LOL

Be safe out there everyone!!
ailurophile6: (no hate)
Things that make me sad:

The terrorist acts in Paris :( My sympathies to everyone there, especially the family and friends of the hostages.

Another AirAsia plane lost at sea :(

The Steelers losing in the first round of the playoffs....

Seeing birthday notices for lj friends who haven't been around in years....

Listening to the last ep of Cabin Pressure (even tho it's hilarious!!)

Things that make me happy:

Benedict is going to be a daddy! :)

All of the nominations for Benedict and The Imitation Game!

The Pens are in first place \o/ and are as always, a contender for the Cup!

My new kitty (even tho he bites, hard!)

It's Saturday :D

And one minor irritant that really is terrible of me, but!

I'm sure Eddie Redmayne is great in The Theory of Everything, but it burns me up that he's being nominated for and may win awards for a role that Benedict played to perfection in Hawking, years ago. I know, that's stupid of me, lol

SO, anything you all want to get off your chests? LOL

One drawback of owning multiple cats is that when you wake up to a pool of blood on the dining room floor and no obviously injured animal, you spend the day wondering which one it was and what happened!

They are all uninjured, all acting normally, all of them ate breakfast.

What the heck happened??

I'm going to be worried all day, and I'm not going to be home all day. I hope I don't come back to another one.

Ok, so far the new season of Dr. Who has been disappointing. Apparently, I'm missing the deep, dark meaning of these episodes :/ Capaldi is fine, but he mumbles his lines too much. Clara is suddenly super companion. And don't even get me started on the horrible, forced relationship with Danny, ugh (and I hated the guy who played Robin Hood).

The domestic/child abuse events in the NFL are sickening. I just have to keep thinking that there are hundreds of other NFL players who do not abuse their families, and actually do a lot of good things.

I stand by my prediction of a losing Steelers season.

Pitt is 3-0 though, so that's good :)

I was supposed to have plans today, but per usual, my family never followed through. I am really getting tired of that :/ So, I'll watch football and read today, I guess.

Work is fine. Still settling in, but so far so good.

Just found out that there are going to be several minor cast members (the boys) from A Christmas Story at the Steel City Con in December. This should be awesome, lol. I hope to get a group photo op, because that is my favorite Chrismas movie :D

And if you're still reading, is there anyone who needs SGA seasons 1-3 on DVD? I was given them by the lovely [ profile] vecturist, but I got my series set back (long story) and would like to pass them along to someone who would appreciate them (for free!).

Looking forward to the new TV season, but I haven't seen any good new shows coming out. Anyone have a show they've heard good things about and can recommend (NO COMEDIES PLS)?
ailurophile6: (isaac redman)
But the Steelers look awful :/

It's going to be a long season.

I found out today that Anthony Curran is going to be at Dragon Con. And I'm not going this year :/

The new job is going mostly well. There are some frustrating aspects and this week has been full of them. I know it will be better with time but I hate not knowing exactly what I'm doing.

And I know it's for a good cause, but I am so sick of the ice bucket challenge, I can't even!! lol

Ok, time for bed I think.

Looking forward to the season premiere of Dr. Who, even tho I already miss 11....
ailurophile6: (sympathy)
Robin Williams found dead of apparent suicide....

This makes me so sad. He was the funniest man ever

ailurophile6: (sunflowers)
I turn to those of you who have a house with landscaping or anyone with experience landscaping:

I have mulch around 2/3 of my house, and I hate it. I hate yardwork and pay a great guy to cut the grass and trim the bushes, etc.

But I usually have to deal with the mulch and weeds.

There has to be something better/easier to maintain that does not cost a fortune.

Does anyone have suggestions for replacing my mulch beds??

ailurophile6: (american flag)
Went to see the new XMen movie today. It was...ok. Not sure why everyone is raving about it, but whatever, lol. I prefer the Avengers, tbh.

Also, my mother and I went to our final Broadway Series show, Peter and the Starcatcher. We left at intermission :/

It was extremely difficult to understand because they had English accents and were talking really fast (my mother was wearing her new hearing aids and still could not follow it) and it was just not very we left.

I'm watching hockey now and am much happier :)

Not sure what I'm doing tomorrow except painting the bathroom vanity. But yay for 3 day weekends!

Have a great Memorial Day, my American friends!

Getting ready for a Super Bowl party at my house later today. Go Broncos! (Sorry [ profile] mercury973). I do love
MVPeyton :)

Work is going better, but I'm still looking for a new job. The one I interviewed for last week was misleading in the job description and hours, so I am not taking it :(

However, TPTB at my job think I'm doing really well (like, a bunch of them and people at the big company I'm not allowed to tell people I work for listened to one of my calls and thought it was almost perfect, and some said it was perfect) even tho I don't feel like I know what I'm doing a lot of the time. I hate the micromanaging all the freaking time!!

I'd better get a daylight shift in March if I'm still there at that time..... :/

I'm not happy that I'm going to miss the Olympics every night :/ although I think we should boycott them anyway because of the "no gays in Russia" thing.

It's becoming harder to keep up with all the TV shows I watch, so I've eliminated The Tomorrow People (nothing ever happens to move this story along!) and Elementary (this time I mean it, last week's episode was horrible). And Arrow is next if there is not more JB and Manu Bennett soon!

At least some of the shows, like American Horror Story and Sleepy Hollow, have ended for the season, lol

But now Suits, Defiance, Lost Girl, etc are all coming back to take their places! I can't keep up :D

Of the new shows that have come on this season, I'd have to say that I love Sleepy Hollow, The Blacklist (James Spader can do no wrong), HELIX (I LOVE THIS SHOW), and REIGN (please watch this show so it doesn't get cancelled!!).

I wouldn't mind too much if Agents of Shield, Dracula, and Once Upon a Time in Wonderland were not renewed, although I do enjoy them to a degree.

My other favorites are in no danger of cancellation :)

What are you all watching and loving?

One of my favorite things :)

Yesterday Peyton defeated Satan to get to the Superbowl \o/ and Seattle defeated the hated 49ers to get there!

Go Broncos! I do love Peyton :D

And I just found out that I'm going to the Pens game tonight, with my brother in law \o/ Last year for Father's Day, my nephew Sean bought his dad a partial season ticket package, which I paid for (at the time because he didn't have a credit card). So, as a return favor, I get to go to a game :)

I get to see my beloved Pens in person. It's been a few years since I've gone to a game, so I'm excited!

My job continues to be ok, but the micro managing is killing me. I'm still looking for something else, because sometimes I just can't wait to get out of there. There's just so much information to learn and so much pressure to have expert stats even though we've only been on the phones a month. However, they keep telling me I'm doing well, even though I don't feel like I am.....ugh

It pays the bills, and as long as they don't fire me (lol, they're trying to figure out why people keep quitting, they can't fire anyone at this point) I'll have to stick it out until I find something else...

Happy MLK Day everyone! Hope you're all doing well :)

Because I could not resist :)

Take, edit, no credit needed.

Yesterday I had time on my hands because I had to call off work. My water pipes were frozen and I was unable to thaw them for more than 24 hours, so I called the water authority. Finally got the water on; in the meantime, I blew a fuse and had to go buy some so I could get my electrical sockets working in the kitchen and laundry room. And then I had to thaw my garage door that had frozen shut (so I couldn't have gotten out to go to work anyway, lol).

Today everything is fine, thank goodness. And Sunday we're having our rescheduled Christmas party (delayed due to my friend's unexpected passing on 12/14).

I just want to get back to normal!

And greatly looking forward to His Last Vow on Sunday :)

So, apparently there is a playoff game of some type in Pittsburgh tonight. The Pirates? LOL

First one in 21 years, so even though I do not care about baseball, let's go Bucs! I hope they win. I'll be watching Agents of Shield :)

This came out today:

Cannot wait!!

Am applying for jobs this week. Not that I really want to do that, but I guess I have to....
ailurophile6: (sunflowers)
I got laid off today.

I'm surprised, because I was a productive and reliable worker.

I'm not surprised, because I have a degree and made more money than my co workers (not by much, but still...)

So, back to unemployment tomorrow.

Once I know how much I'll get from that, I'll have a better idea of how worried I should be...I do have money in savings and minimal expenses (and I can cut those down too if needed).

My parents have already said they are there if I need financial support.

And I don't mind having some time off. I just hope I can find something decent.

So, I guess it could be worse.
ailurophile6: (sherlocked)
how are you so adorable?!

In other news, my Windows 7 computer died Sunday, so I upgraded. This new computer has 1TB of memory, omg and a wide screen monitor that takes some getting used to.

But, Windows 8, how much do I HATE you? Let me count the ways!

This new OS sucks. There is no start/restart button for one thing. There is no clock visible at all times, which is imperative for me!

The minimize feature is gone. I cannot close my browser without using task manager, FFS.

I could go on and on.

A couple weeks ago I imported my lj into DW, just in case I decide to go there permanently, so hopefully this will crosspost correctly.

Last night I finally watched Paul McGillion's movie, Christmas Magic.

spoiler for Xmas Magic )

I'm still in limbo over my job situation. I did get the notification that I qualify for the highest level of unemployment compensation, but only for 6 months. I'm hoping to have my mortgage situation and new job lined up long before that, however.

I'm enjoying my time off but I'm starting to get anxious. I hate not having things resolved.
ailurophile6: (i love pizza)
because my furnace refuses to work, lol

Luckily, I have family in the heating/cooling business. My cousin Jennifer just called me and they are sending someone over later today.

I wasn't planning on a new furnace, but mine is 17-18 years old and has never worked properly, so it might be time.

How long are furnaces supposed to last, anyway?

The AC has always worked great, probably because I don't use it much. I prefer to open the windows :)

Now I plan to keep warm by thoroughly cleaning my house!

Hope you're all warm this weekend :D

but they chose inaction.

Paterno and Spanier fired from PSU

Read the indictment here

warning! graphic content!

Jerry Sandusky was an assistant for twenty three years. You will never convince me that they had no idea what he was doing.

To all of those in authority who failed to act, I have one question:

How do you sleep at night?

Shame on you.

Losing your jobs should be the least of your worries.
